Futuristic Interior Design : An IT Entrepreneur’s Home
September 03, 2010

We don’t know if you ever imagined how an IT Entrepreneur’s Home would look like, which is why we decided to give you a glimpse of a futuristic project, to say the least. Villa F is located in Vienna, Austria and was designed by the architects over at Najjar & Najjar. A real fan of Mac computer designs and Lamborginis, the owner wanted a place where he could live and work and that would reflect his passions. Moreover, he made sure his crib housed the latest trends in home technologies. Plasma TVs jumping out of seemingly common furniture, a large aquarium with computer generated graphics, LED lighting and sound systems turned on and off with the help of a mouse click- everything in this futuristic place is digitally maneuvered. We are really curious to find out what you think about this house, because from where we are standing, it doesn’t look to homey. It would also be fun to know if you think this place is suited for the personality of someone working in IT.

Ikea Started Selling Second Hand Furniture Online
September 03, 2010

Shoppers eager to nab discounted furniture at cut-rate prices may soon be able to bypass Craigslist and head straight to the mother ship of cheap home furnishings: IKEA. A few days ago on August 28, the Swedish furniture company started selling second-hand Ikea products online in Sweden and they intend to extend this idea to other foreign outlets. Here is what Peter Agnefäll, CEO of IKEA Sweden told the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter about this innitiative : “It is about taking an environmental responsibility for how our products are used in the longer term and making it easier for our customers to do their part for their responsibility towards the environment.” We can say that this is a nice step toward sustainability, but in the same time we’re wondering about the quality of the pieces that will be sold. Finally would you buy second-hand furniture from IKEA ? And what do you think about this idea ? – Via - Time

House 6, a Showcase of Contemporary Living in Brazil
September 03, 2010

House 6 comes from Studio MK27 and it is an impressive architecture project located in São Paulo, Brazil. Meant to redefine the traditional veranda area, this house is composed of two impressive rectangular building entities joined together at different ends. This way they form a charming home outdoor gallery beneath which serves as an entertainment space for the people inside. The stacked volumes are also a very original way to separate the levels of the residence. This house is as beautiful looking as it is diverse. The first floor- the one connected directly to the outdoor pool- houses the living, kitchen and dining space. Large windows provide a good relationship with the exterior and soothing views. The second floor hosts a kitchen extension, a bar and a beautiful entertainment room (the one with the TV in the photos below). How’s this for a showcase of contemporary living?

Villa Kanousan, Amazing Cube Home in Japan
September 03, 2010

Built as a getaway for a family working in Tokyo, this incredible project inspired by a cube comes from Yuusuke Karasawa Architects and offers amazing vistas of Kanousan, Japan. The homogeneous feel given by the fact that this house is painted entirely in white is disrupted by the infinitude views that it offers. As soon as one changes his or her observing point, the perspective changes also. Each angle of sight is different, spectacular and totally unexpected. This is definitely a home that will never get its inhabitants tired of exploring. We particularly like the svelte interior staircase which manages to highlight the overall strange but fascinating geometry of this place. What do you think? Would you like to get lost in the immaculate labyrinthic rooms that this type of residence provides?

ceiling fan innovative Modern Ceiling Fan with Retractable Blades ( Video )

The Hunter Fanaway Ceiling Fan is an innovative ceiling fan that has a stylish design which features clear retractable blades. Yes you’ve heard me …retractable blades …when the Fanaway fan is turned off the blades retract and are hidden so you are left with a modern pendant light fixture. Isn’t it cool ? The Fanaway ceiling fan is made from recyclable materials and has a sleek, energy efficient design. The WhisperWind motor is built for quiet operation and to produce a powerful airflow of 4186 cubic feet per minute, also known as CFM. This fan also features low-energy lighting. If you’d like to see how this fan works, and especially the retractable blades take a look at the video attached at the end of this post, I’m pretty sure you’ll love it. You can buy it from here. Thanks Melissa O’Connor for the suggestion.

Astonishing Campus Event Arena Built Out Of Beer Boxes
September 02, 2010

This unusual pavilion is called BOXEL and was designed by the students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany. Henri Schweynoch, together with his architecture team won a local competition with this project which is soon to house college concerts, presentations and other type of events. The surprising thing about this small arena is the fact that it is not built using common materials, but it consists of beer boxes. That’s right, in order to host campus events, 2000 beer boxes were temporarily “sacrificed” and were given a fun shape and a new meaning. We think the overall geometry of this pavilion is original and surprising. We salute this idea and awaiting more and more student projects on Freshome, hopefully involving recycling as well. -via Arch Daily

5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Home Floor Plan
September 02, 2010

The layout of your home is probably one of the most significant choices you will ever make regarding your home. Regardless if you live in an apartment, a condominium or a house, the layout of the rooms and how they flow will largely depend on your lifestyle.  Whether you prefer single story or multiple stories, and all the bedrooms on the top floor – choosing a perfect plan can be stressful.  Here are 5 tips to help you decide on a plan right for your family.

1.) Choose a floor plan that suits your lifestyle: In a previous post we discussed the pros and cons of having an open floor plan.  There are factors you should consider regardless of openness. Factors such as: layout of rooms with consideration of family size and ages of children is essential. Most families who have young children like to have the private spaces of the house – bedrooms and bathrooms grouped in one area of the home.  While families with teenagers and young adults prefer to have bedrooms separated from each other.  If you’re house hunting, these factors will be important when choosing a home to move into. Assess your current floor plan and what the pros and cons are.  You may like it, or would prefer to try a different one.

floor plan s e1283421609770 5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Home Floor Plan

2.) Do you entertain often or rarely? Many home floor plans are centered on entertaining and welcoming guests the minute they step through the front door. A wide foyer opening into an open floor plan living and dining room and meandering to the outdoors would be perfect for guests visiting. Although, if you and your family are more private and don’t like your full home on display every time the front door is opened, you may opt for a formal living room adjacent to the front door. This will allow guests a place to immediately sit and feel comfortable while leaving the rest of your house private.

floor plan Foyer s e1283421238748 5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Home Floor Plan

3.)    Single story or multistory? Many families enjoy single story homes for the quietness of no overhead foot traffic noise.  Some single story homes, or ‘Ranch’ style homes tend to group public rooms in the center and bedrooms and baths are located on the “wings” of the floor plan.  Multistory homes give the added benefit of views to the outside instead of looking directly into a neighbor’s window. Multistory homes also give each family member their own space and room to have privacy over single story floor plans.

4.)    Do certain functions of your home need special accessibility? Whether you have a live-in family member that needs extra space to maneuver or children who need extra wide hallways to run around, consider this factor when choosing a floor plan.  Older homes tend to have narrower hallways, doorways and often door head heights. Remember renovating or altering non load bearing wall locations in the future is an option.  Consider this if you fall in love with a floor plan but your family needs change over the years.

floor plan open s e1283422014441 5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Home Floor Plan

5.)    How much outdoor living do you wish to have? Your floor plan will most likely include an outdoor leisure area. Whether that is a porch, lanai, swimming pool or other amenities.  When choosing a floor plan, assess how much your family will use these outdoor leisure amenities. Similar to a large yard, it looks beautiful when you keep up with it, but can look terrible if you don’t.  Ensure you want the added responsibility of keeping up with the outdoor plan AND the indoors at the same time.

Deciding on a floor plan can be fun and frustrating at the same time.  Assess your family’s lifestyle and your preferences to how you enjoy living.  With patience your dream home floor plan will be easier to find than you think!

Freshome reader’s how did you choose the floor plan of your current home? Do you like it, or would you change it? Share with us your thoughts.

Exciting Home Full of Energy and Color
September 02, 2010

Have you ever seen so much vitality in an apartment before? Usually, when we are dealing with so many colors, we have to overcome the huge risk of visually jamming up a room. However, in this situation it seems that everything is in its right place and the atmosphere that this apartment inspires is that of extreme energy and jauntiness. Especially designed for a young working couple, this house is meant to be a fusion of passions and interests. As their styles were very different and both wanted some of their own furniture to be integrated in within the new home, things were pretty challenging for the designers. All throughout the crib, you will notice interesting decorating elements such as classic wood furniture (his influence ) and unusual masks and shoes ornaments (for her). We have to say the end result is creative, fun and unconventional.-via micasa

The Collector’s Loft, Art Gallery and Living Space Combined
September 02, 2010

We really appreciate the originality of this apartment design by UNStudio located in downtown Manhattan, New York. Called “The Collector’s Loft”, this beautiful home combines the elegance of an art gallery with the coziness of a common apartment. The owner wanted a special place for depositing his books and different artifacts he had collected throughout the years, a crib that would offer him the comfort of interacting with art. You can observe the outcome in the photos below but before you do, here is more information on this unusual house from the designers: “Gently flowing curved walls were introduced to virtually divide the main space into proportionally balanced spaces. This created zones of comfortable proportions for domestic use, while simultaneously generating a large amount of wall space for the display of art. The meandering walls frame an open a space that privileges long perspectives, with more sheltered corners and niches nestled in the curves. In this hybrid space exhibition areas merge into the living areas; a floating exhibition wall blends into library shelves on one side and into a display case on the other side.” What do you think? Would living in such a home increase your art appetite?

Crucifix Surge Suppressor: Shocking or Practical?
September 01, 2010

Providing “comprehensive protection from evil, power surges, and AC contamination.”, this unusual electrical extension comes from architect Alexander Pincus and was designed for Means of Production. What you can observe in the pictures below is a surge protector shaped like a crucifix which has no less than 12 outlets. The project’s name is “Power”, which does not come as a surprise, considering the amount of energy it can offer indirectly. The product can also accommodate oversize adapters, ones that don’t usually fit in a common single power outlet. We have to admit we were a bit surprised to see the shape of this surge protector, but hey, perhaps the designer was not so much trying to shock, but rather offer a practical solution. What do you believe his intention was?- via Dezeen

The Morumbi Residence: Exotic Landscapes and Diverse Interior Design
September 01, 2010

This fascinating residence comes from Drucker Arquitetura and is located in São Paulo, Brazil. Situated on the Morumbi hills, the house offers great views while being well integrated within its surrounding landscape. The balconies and floor to ceiling windows invite its guests to contemplate the beautiful palm trees outside and draws them to the outdoor pool. According to the architects, “the pattern of circulation forces the occupants to come out to wooden decks. Environments TV room, dining room and office, reveal themselves behind high gates fully retractable and all environments are linked as a large loft. The house also has sewage treatment, solar heater, cross ventilation, windows with heat control, polystyrene insulation, digital control of lighting, recycled wood, among other measures of green architecture.” The interior design is diverse and this time we’ve posted lots of photos for you to check out and get inspired.

Mountain Home with Increased Comfort in Australia
September 01, 2010

For those of us traveling to the mountains, accommodation consists in humble but inviting cottages, usually with a rustic feel. This mountain home however took us by surprise with its modern architecture, pool and sauna. The Bowen Mountain house comes from CplusC Architecture and is located in New South Wales, Australia. Meant as a weekend-escape, this home combines the comfort of contemporary living with that of being a part of nature. Here is more information on the construction from the architects: “New and recycled Australian hardwoods were used to frame the steel structure. Soft-toned grey steel used for the dramatically angled roof blends with the muted tones of the surrounding bush. Glass was used extensively throughout the home, with dramatic effect. The structure seems to almost hover over the site and indoor and outdoor spaces merge seamlessly.” Does this not seem like the ultimate weekend refuge?

Interview: Passion for Landscape Architecture with Jeffery Smith
September 01, 2010

Today’s interview follows the genesis and the rising of the passion for landscape architecture. Designing outdoor and public spaces is a fascinating field for the creator as well as for the beholder. We provoked Jeffery Smith from JGSDesigns, a talented landscape architect, to answer our Freshome 15 Question Interview. We also added some of his company’s works, for a fun reading:

  • Freshome: What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.
  • Jeffery Smith: I grew up with a passion for drawing and building things, not quite understanding it was design until I was exposed to it in College.  I wanted to go to a great architecture school and Cal Poly SLO was it at the time. Unfortunately my grades and SAT score were not that great to get into the architecture department, so my father, an electrical engineer, suggested Civil Engineering.  I spent a year learning Calculus, Physics, chemistry and taking numerous engineering classes only to find I was missing my passion, more of what I call the ‘Art’ side.  I found out about Landscape Architecture and have not looked back. In fact I consider myself a born again Landscape Architect.

08 4178 Interview: Passion for Landscape Architecture with Jeffery Smith

  • Freshome: Can you remember your first design project? Describe it a bit, whether it is a gizmo you worked at as a little kid or something that was sold at a large scale.
  • Jeffery Smith: Yes. In college we had to design a 3-d sculptural piece, modeled with a small  10″x10″ sheet of foam core. I cut hundreds of tiny 1/4″x1/8″ blocks which were then glued to each other to form an arch with the blocks dripping off.  Big mistake on materials and construction! Seemed like a great concept and idea but the execution was not fun. It took days and many x-acto blades to cut well shaped blocks and glue them together.  One of my great problems is being so anal on detail it killed me.
  • Freshome: What field of design are you most interested in? Do your works have anything to do with it ? (We are asking this because not many designers do what they actually want)
  • Jeffery Smith: I enjoy all design in general but I Love my field!! There are so many materials to work with in landscape architecture.  Working with hardscape and softscape creates a real cross between art and science; Never static but always changing and evolving with time and season.
  • Freshome: Chronologically describe what you are going through (feeling and thoughts) on your way to work.
  • Jeffery Smith: I always work. Even when I’m sleeping I’m designing. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and dream up a solution to my design problem.  Going to work is more of the same thinking of how to solve a problem.

U6T0751 1 Interview: Passion for Landscape Architecture with Jeffery Smith

  • Freshome: What is your favourite book/magazine on design? How about your favourite site?
  • Jeffery Smith: Sunset Western Garden Book is pretty much the plant bible, but it is certainly not the only resource we use frequently. “Landscape Plants for Western Regions” by Bob Perry is incredibly useful for designing in California. It is our most worn book at the office, but unfortunately is out of print. Lastly Rick Darke’s “Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable landscapes” has amazing pictures of grasses not even found in the Sunset Book. We are constantly cross referencing all of our plant books to ensure suitable combinations for soil and environment.
  • Freshome: What inspires you?
  • Jeffery Smith: Nature!  I am inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy. He can capture a place and moment so simply as if he is in touch with it.

  • Freshome: What is the most frustrating aspect of your job as a designer? And the most rewarding one?
  • Jeffery Smith: Money is the most frustrating!  Most rewarding, clients that are continually amazed how we transformed their world!
  • Freshome: From your point of view, is design an art or a science?
  • Jeffery Smith: Aspects of design can be taught as if they are a science. In landscape architecture there are certainly scientific ways to approach a site, through site or “field” studies where we take into account surrounding native plant materials, native rock, stone, soil…etc. But just because you can come to a project with the right materials, does not mean you will come out with a great design. Paint colors do not determine the making of a masterpiece for an artist. It’s art to put plant materials and hardscape into a balance, and to create spaces that invite you to spend time in them.

landscape architecture2357 Interview: Passion for Landscape Architecture with Jeffery Smith

  • Freshome: Tell us something unusual that happened in your carrier.
  • Jeffery Smith: I was designing a 27 hole golf course in the Fujian provence of China and had no background in the Chinese language. I found out I could use Latin to communicate about plants with the chinese botanist and we completely understood each other.
  • Freshome: Let’s say you entered a contest. You have to come up with a design for the first house on the Moon built for extra-terrestrial living. How would your project look like?
  • Jeffery Smith: Out of this world!
  • Freshome: If design were a product, what would it be and how would you design it?
  • Jeffery Smith: It would be a circle. It’s never finished you keep coming back to the concept and refine.
  • Freshome: If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?
  • Jeffery Smith: I would love to design a resort. Those are the ultimate sanctuaries where people are trying to get away from it all. So many resorts/hotels are all the same, but there is so much more that can be done! We need to escape the stereotypical palm trees and pool and create spaces that have greater connections to their surroundings.

  • Jeffery Smith: Passion, follow what’s in your heart! Celebrate where you live and get in touch with your surroundings!
  • Freshome: What do you think of our site?
  • Jeffery Smith: It could use more Landscape Architecture
  • Freshome: What advice do you have for young designers or architects reading this interview?

September 01, 2010

We have to say this home acted as a reminder that we should enjoy summer while it lasts. Painted entirely in white, this beautiful residence located in Costa Brava, Spain, inspires tranquility and warmth. A welcoming outdoor garden with playful and comfortable furniture greets its guests while in the same time creating a general idea of how this place feels. The interior design couldn’t be more appealing. Everything seems soothing and inviting, starting with the white walls, the original fireplace and not to mention the cheerful colors. Pink and blue items animate this home and together with the vintage wooden elements create an unforgettable, inspiring decor. We particularly like the pillows on the floors, as they contribute to the playfulness and overall coziness of this place.-via Desire to Inspire

20 Ways Wood Will Beautify Your Home
August 31, 2010

Warm, organic textures and materials are what people love around them in their homes.  Wood is the perfect natural material that brings nature into your home and commands respect at the same time.  Regardless of your decorating style, there is a wood that meets your comfort level and will symbolize strength and tranquility simultaneously. From flooring to architectural details wood is one of the most versatile materials for your home.  Here are 20 of the best uses for wood in your home, from architectural elements to décor, we have you covered!

wood living room 20 Ways Wood Will Beautify Your Home1.) Add wood architectural detailing: Want to make an ordinary wall have formality and distinction? Add wood moldings like crown and wainscoting to a simple wall and watch how it transforms. To add distinction to furniture, try using moldings and rosettes to enhance the beauty and bring visual interest.

2.) Wood flooring patterns can add beauty to a space: In hallways, foyers, and large rooms, consider using parquet wood tiles in a decorative pattern.  Try using contrasting wood colors and varieties instead of an area rug. Parquet can also be used as a border around the perimeter of a room or used subtly

3.) There is a wood for every budget: Wood is very versatile in décor as well as in budget.  For those that want high variety exotic woods, Brazilian Rosewood, Teak, and Ebony are gorgeous and unique. Flooring and select furniture utilize these gorgeous but pricey woods.  For those that want less expensive wood, White Oak and straight grained Maple are beautiful without the hit to the wallet. Use these varieties in a cabinetry and furniture.

Consider using cork for all of its benefits: May people don’t know that cork is a wood made from the cork oak tree and has remarkable qualities when used in the home. Cork flooring is soft under foot and has great sound reduction properties.  Use cork in areas with a lot of foot traffic and noise, like a children’s playroom or hallway. Cork is also eco-friendly and comes in variety of colors and patterns.  Cork is beautiful in wall and ceiling panels too!

5.) Group wood décor together to add visual interest: In popular home furnishing magazines you can see how designers group wood bowls, artifacts of varying colors and sizes together to create mini themes.  Whether it’s on a coffee table, amongst books in a bookshelf, or even on a kitchen counter, wood décor groupings are easy to create.  Use treasures of your own, or visit thrift, and antique shops to gather “artifact’ looking décor.

6.) Use wood in exterior detailing of your home: Wood has always been an exterior home material that is versatile, strong and when taken care of – can last for years into the future.  Wooden columns, balustrades, and moldings can add definition to your exterior façade.  Especially used on front porches, entryways and around windows and doors. When using wood outside make sure the wood has been pressure treated.  This is wood that has been injected with chemicals to keep it insect, termite and fungal free when used outside.

Re-use wood in your home decor: With the recent onset of great eco-friendly ways to decorate your home, reusing wood materials in new ways in your home can give your home a new look. Consider using old wood doors as headboards or a new table in your home.  Wood siding can be sanded and refinished to use as carpentry wood for home décor projects. One note: do not use palette wood that is usually found behind grocery stores and warehouses.  This wood is used to move food, chemicals, dirt, etc… and can harbor germs and bacteria.

8.) Mix and match wood varieties: Long gone are the days when the wood of the floor had to match the wood in the furnishings and crown molding.  In today’s world different varieties are mixed and matched and leave a sense of excitement in what would ordinarily be a boring room. To add an eclectic aesthetic to your kitchen use different wood on your upper and lower cabinets! It sounds strange, but the result is a beautiful mesh of two worlds.  Choose a counter top material that blends with both woods to pull the look together.

9.) Wood ceilings aren’t just for home libraries: When wood is used on the ceiling it gives the room a natural and warm sense above your head.  Coffered and paneled ceilings can be simple or intricate.  If you want to save money use laminates that look like wood and can be applied to walls and ceilings.

Wood shutters tend to keep light out when closed, and look beautiful from the outside of your home as well as inside.  Blinds and shades are less expensive than shutters and are easier to install.  Depending on the type of wood, window treatments can add up cost wise when pricing them for your home. Consider putting the more expensive treatments in the public areas of your home and save the inexpensive ones for bathrooms and utilitarian spaces.

11.) Use decorative wood screens to divide a space: Try using wood room dividers to break up a space visually or to add another use for a room.  Antique and artisan screens come in a variety of styles, colors and heights. Wood screens can also be used as head boards in the bedroom!

12.) Wooden beams add architectural interest: There was a time in residential architecture that exposed wood ceiling beams were covered with drywall and hidden from plain sight.  Over the years exposed wood beams add architectural interest and can add a rustic aesthetic to the room.  Heavy timber – such as reused railroad tracks/ties are especially popular in ceiling design. For a more refined look, beams can be finished smooth and stained in a variety of colors and finishes.

Why not sand down the original finish and add a new stain color? For rooms that you want a pop of color, paint furniture with a bold accent or choose a color from the existing palette of the room.  Do it yourself (DIY) projects allow you to personalize wood furniture, décor, mirror frames, etc… into your own works of art.  Visit your local craft store or surf the internet for more do it yourself wood projects.

14.) Frame artwork and family photographs in wood frames: Wood is versatile and timeless. From light oak and clean streamlined frames to bold mahogany styles, there is a wood frame waiting for your personal touch.  Look around the room to see what existing color palette is currently being used. Consider going one shade lighter or darker to add contrast and to draw the eye to the subject of the framed work. Look in popular furniture magazines to see how they display collections, family photos and artwork.

15.) Make a room feel bigger with lighter woods: When choosing a wood color for furnishings take into account how the large the space is.  Lighter wood can make a small space feel more spacious while dark wood tends to command a presence and will swallow a small space up.  If your room is too large consider using a mix of various complementing varieties of wood to give the eye separate areas of the room to focus. This wall make the room feel more cozy and not so vast and cold.

wood mixing 20 Ways Wood Will Beautify Your Home16.) Wooden bead board can hide imperfections: Bead board is pieces of wood applied to walls to help with heavy traffic and abuse.  Originally, bead board had a utilitarian application, although today it also has a decorative function. Solid, stained wood bead board is popular in formal dining rooms, libraries and home offices to give a refined look.  Bead board also comes in pre fabricated veneer panel sheets.  The veneer can resemble your favorite exotic wood for a fraction of the price.

17.) Shop online classifieds for treasure finds: Still trying to add wood furniture to your home but you don’t have the money to spring for new furniture? Try online classifieds and don’t be afraid to haggle down the price! When considering buying, make sure you look at the sturdiness of the piece, and the condition in which they are selling it.  Don’t take anyone’s word over the phone.

18.) Invest in one dynamic piece of wood furniture: Create a focal point in your space by using a curio cabinet, an entertainment center or even a butcher block island in the kitchen.  These investments will add a base that you can then add small accessories like pillows, collectibles or decorative kitchen counter décor to enhance.  When wood is taken care of it will last for generations and will look better year after year.

wood butcher block e1283056546928 20 Ways Wood Will Beautify Your Home19.) Wood is a perfect material for a fireplace mantel: Large pieces of timber that are rustic and unfinished are perfect mantels for nature inspired homes. For more traditional homes, consider using wood detailing carved into the mantle and fireplace surrounds.  Wood can extend above the mantel with crown molding. While on the wall and vertical supports, ornamentation can be added for a classical architectural feel.

20.) Wood head and foot boards set the scene in a bedroom: The bed is the main focal point of any bedroom. Depending on your personal style, a wood head/foot board can change a room instantly. For a dramatic feel a wood sleigh bed or four poster canopy bed is a dynamic way to catch the eye. For a more subtle look, a clean lined Mission style bed maybe for you.  Regardless of your choice, a wood head/foot board bed will be a pleasure to wake up in every morning.

When wood is added to your home the possibilities of décor are endless. For every budget and style there is a wood to help you create the ideal home.  Re-purpose wood and use it in new ways to give old life to a pre-existing piece of wood. Refinish furniture, search yard sales, and rummage through your attic. Whether the wood is old or new, it will always make your home feel natural and warm.

Corocotta Table by Jason Phillips Design
August 31, 2010

Designed by Jason Phillips Design the Corocotta Table is a concept that employs solid wood end cuts from furniture production and links them together in a twisting configuration that accepts a glass top and can be used as a cocktail table. Measuring 54x30x17”h, the piece is supported by a steel armature that is threaded through the cubes, providing a structurally sound form that defies gravity. The piece was influenced by the story of an ancient warrior. According to several historians, Corocotta was a Cantabrian warrior leader during the 1st century BC. His great achievement was the union of the disperse Cantabri clans in an alliance against the invading Roman armies, to the great exasperation of the powerful empire.

He fought against Rome from the years 29 BC to 19 BC. The Roman historian Dio Cassius relates the story of this robber who caused numerous difficulties for the Roman Army. Such was his fame that during the campaign of Emperor Augustus in Cantabria from 26-25 BC, a price of 200,000 sestercii was put on his head. To the emperor’s astonishment, none other than Corocotta himself walked into the Roman camp, presenting himself and demanding the reward. In a gesture to Corocotta’s bravery, the Augustus let him go after granting him the money. Beautiful story …and beautiful piece of furniture.

Mind-blowing Houseboat Living in the Middle of Hamburg, Germany
August 31, 2010

Living on water is so exotic and so unusual that more and more people are willing to give it a try. This mind-blowing residence comes from Rost Niderehe Architects and combines the comfort of a modern home with the shape and eccentricity of living on a boat. We think the most fascinating aspect of this project is its location. This boat house lies in the middle of Hamburg and it is surrounded by the Eilbek-canal. When its inhabitants get tired of the landscape, they can move their home a few meters to the left or to the right by using a tug. This residence has two levels also known as the upper deck and lower deck that host the living and working areas. Once inside, there is little trace that may lead one to believe this is a house build on water. The interior design is spotless and the decorative elements are simply surprising. Living in the middle of nature in your large city without being a part of the urban racket- how great is that?

As we were looking over some fresh ideas to share with you, this Beam Light created by Swedish designer Johan Carpner caught our attention. After all, it isn’t every day that you see an upside-down table lamp suspended from the ceiling. This unusual looking pendant lamp features a functional hinge that allows its user to twist the spot at will and create the right amount of light wherever it is needed. This is a great example of a simple idea turned into a highly original design. Beam Light is available in red, black and white and goes great in any modern interior with a personality.
