Here's an excerpt from a recent Techcrunch article regarding Robert Scoble's Twitter habits:
"I asked Robert how much time he actually spends on those services. He monitors them all day, he said, hitting refresh over and over on both (he doesn’t use desktop clients to manage the services, and he says he doesn’t like real-time streaming feature on Friendfeed). In addition to watching all day, he says he spends at least seven hours a day, seven days a week, actually reading and responding directly on those services.
That’s 2,555 hours over the last year.
Which is more than a full time job (2,000 hours/year).
It is more than 106 full 24 hour days interacting with those services in aggregate."

This is just insane to me. Do any of you have a similar problem? How do you fit Twitter into your daily routine? How much time do you spend on Twitter on an average day?

No I am not addicted to Twitter but can see how one can be.
I do use certain twitter tools, however:
TweetBeep (for alerts)
TwitterLocal to connect with folks in my area,
TwitPic to share photos
Twitterfeed to auto send blog posts to twitter.
Mr Tweet to suggest folks to follow
I added a "Twit This" Wordpress plug-in so readers could send blog posts to twitter.
Results: more blog visits & subscribers, more followers on Twitter
Interesting tidbit from Gary Vaynerchuk : he sent a free shipping code over twitter and got 1700 orders-- more than from his billboard, radio and print ads combined.

Hey John, Im the same way. I usually keep it up while at work but only actually posting anything once or twice (sometimes hard to do that even). It is mind boggling how much time Robert spends on these tools.
Hey Bob, I definitely need to check out Twhirl. I hear a lot about it but havent had the chance to spend some time with it.

I'd get in trouble if I was 100% truthful here but let's just say I am logged into Twitter at home when I am home and at work when I am at work. I'm not as active at work but I won't lie about it and say i'm not active at all.
At work I am consistently logged into Active Rain & Trulia. I work in the Internet Marketing field for the real estate industry so this makes sense and is allowable.
My weak spot is with e-mail alerts such as the one I got alerting me to this post. It caused me to log in, read & comment. This is one great way to remind me to be consistently diligent with my social media efforts.
Sincerely,
John F. Jones III

Hi Dave, I haven't been on twitter as much as I used to be. Time constraints and all. But I do like to check in every so often as there is a lot of great info being generated by the intelligent people that I follow. I use Twhirl occasionaly for real time and just the twitter home page for when somebody want to follow me. I can't say I'm addicted even slightly. But say today in the snow I'll probably get on there for a while. Keep warm everybody. Bob H
